 First Aid at Work

The traditional 4 day [24 hour] First Aid at Work [FAW] course has been redesigned.  The new version runs over 3 days [18 hours] and with a slightly streamlined content.  When assessing the level of training required there is now also a 1 day [6 hour] Emergency First Aid at Work [EFAW] for those in lower risk workplaces.  Where there are specific additional factors it might be necessary to have additional training to address this. For guidance please visit the FAQs Current FAW courses

After 3 years a candidate with a current certificate can take the 2 day [12 hour] refresher course rather than the full 3 days.

First Aiders with current certificates are fine until they become due for renewal.  Then either a 2 day Re-qualification or the new EFAW will be the choice.

The new Emergency first Aid at Work [EFAW] is designed to equip the First Aider to give emergency first aid at work.  First Aid at Work [FAW] equips them also for specific injuries and illnesses.  It is the responsibility of the employer to assess their First Aid needs and decide which course is appropriate.   It might be that you identify risks that are not specifically covered in either course such as hydroflouric acid, defibrillators or confined spaces and then additional training will be needed.

Department for Children, Schools and Families [DCSF] in Guidance on First Aid for Schools 1998 note that FAW training does not include resuscitation procedures for children and that the employer should arrange appropriate training.  This would apply to primary schools in particular.  For those wanting an FAW course then a short session covering children [1 > puberty] can be added at the end at no extra charge.

Successful candidates will receive an A4 display  and  plastic credit card size certificates.  They will also be provided with a current First Aid manual and training pack.

Course Content - 100% attendance is required

At the end of the course there is a
practical and oral assessment.

Those in black are as the EFAW, those in green are additional for the FAW.
